From Times Staff and Wire Reports.

The new chief of a state agency that helps finance housing for victims of domestic violence told lawmakers Tuesday that the Davis administration has come up with $4 million to pay for battered-women’s shelters for two more years.

N. Allen Sawyer made the surprise announcement at a hearing called to examine an administration error last year in which 10 shelters were denied funds, partly because their applications were incorrectly typed or too long.

Sawyer told the legislators that the $4 million will be included in Davis’ proposed state budget to continue funding the 10 shelters.

He said the $4 million is surplus from a $50-million project to help reduce the backlog of DNA tests from old rape cases.
