Mammography Is a Lifesaving Procedure

Share

I am extremely distressed about the conflicting opinions from various organizations concerning the value of annual mammograms (Feb. 1). In 1995, at age 57, I was diagnosed with breast cancer after my annual mammogram. My shock was profound, as I had no family history of breast cancer and my annual physicals had shown no evidence of lumps or cysts. The cancer I had was not large enough for any doctor to feel, and without the mammogram I would have gone another year without treatment.

Because it was caught so early, I endured only 33 radiations and a lumpectomy. I truly feel that the mammogram saved my life, if not my breast. What is the downside of mammography? Most health insurance covers the procedure and, if done properly, it is mildly uncomfortable for a few seconds. Women are already confused about hormone replacement therapy, and to “fan the fire” about an annual mammogram is unconscionable!
