Collecting Thoughts

Thank you for your encouragement for the would-be art patron (“A Passion for Art,” by Hillary Johnson, Jan. 31). There are a few more welcoming places which were not mentioned that might be of interest, namely the rental galleries at the Armand Hammer and Los Angeles County Museums, and the Musemembership at LACMA.

The rental galleries offer a wide range of work at reasonable fees which may be applied toward purchase.

The Muse membership is designed for youngish art patrons, who, for a small additional cost over the regular membership, can participate in additional educational/social activities that will enhance their appreciation of and comfort with art. In the words of A. Miripolsky: “Fear no art.”

While I enjoyed reading “A Passion for Art.” I wondered why all the photos and most of the text discussed collections from the dealers’ perspective.

I have been collecting Japanese woodblock prints for many years. My expertise is self-taught. I collect what I love and enjoy, and have put together a stellar collection.

Through my travels, I have met some wonderful people: paper conservators who treat each work with loving hands, fellow collectors who provide advice and are not afraid to share information and framers who coddled me through difficult decisions.

My appreciation and love for art (not to mention my collection) is the legacy I will pass to my children.
