Growing Concerns

Re “Agriculture Education Withering,” Feb. 4: Canoga Park High School agriculture teacher Carrie Robertson states: “People need to understand that the strength of any society is the ability to feed itself.” These words should be framed and hung in the office of every California developer, construction company, real estate agent, elected official, school and public building. And in the kitchen of every resident, farmer and nonfarmer alike.

If we’ve been complacent about our great Central Valley shrinking from farmland to housing tracts, let’s wake up. If L.A. Unified has only slivers of land left for agriculture education, find a way to keep them. Her students are learning solid life lessons that they in turn will teach by example. Classes like Robertson’s are priceless.
