A jury awarded Marvin Windows and Doors $135.8 million from PPG Industries on its claim that a PPG wood preservative failed to prevent wood rot as promised.

The decision was handed down Thursday in U.S. District Court in St. Paul, Minn., and Pittsburgh-based PPG said it would appeal.

Marvin Windows makes made-to-order wood and clad wood windows and doors. PPG is a global supplier of coatings, glass, fiberglass and chemicals.

PPG said in a prepared statement that the verdict was unexpected. The company maintains that its preservative was not defective, saying it has been in use for 20 years.

In NYSE trading, PPG shares were up 74 cents at $49.05.
