Slobodan Milosevic’s wife, Mirjana Markovic, told the weekly magazine Nacional that her husband’s opening speech at the U.N. war crimes trial in The Hague showed that he was “totally superior and relaxed” in facing his accusers.

“He is convinced of the truth and he is laying it out in detail, so it is easy for him to be totally superior and relaxed,” Markovic was quoted as saying. “People who are lying cannot be that convincing and self-assured.”

The former Yugoslav leader is accused of overseeing a decade of violence that accompanied the disintegration of Yugoslavia. He has been indicted on 66 counts of war crimes in Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo.
