Newport Completes Micro Robotics Purchase

Newport Corp. said Tuesday that it completed its acquisition of privately held Micro Robotics Systems Inc. for $65 million in cash, stock and options.

Newport, an Irvine maker of components used in industries ranging from fiber-optic telecommunications to aerospace, said the transaction should slightly boost yearly results, which analysts are estimating at 7 cents a share.

Micro Robotics, a privately held maker of high-precision systems for fiber-optic communications, microwave and semiconductor equipment markets, is expected to generate sales of $13 million to $16 million for the full year, down from about $26 million last, year because of the sluggish fiber-optic market, Newport said.

Micro Robotics is based in North Billerica, Mass.
