Three Military Chiefs Step Down Amid Scandal
Three of Ecuador’s top military officials stepped down amid a growing corruption scandal involving high-ranking officers.
The armed forces, one of the country’s most respected institutions, suffered a blow last year when four officers were accused of using state funds to take a European vacation.
Defense Minister Hugo Unda said navy Adm. Fernando Donoso, air force Gen. Osvaldo Dominguez and joint command chief Adm. Miguel Saona left their posts in an effort to mitigate fallout from the scandal.
The chiefs, whose terms were to expire in May, will be replaced in a reshuffling of officers, with army Gen. Oscar Isch taking charge of the joint command, Unda said.
