Los Angeles County officials unveiled a pedestrian-safety project Thursday in City Terrace in an area notorious among local residents for its fast traffic rushing in front of two elementary schools.

The project on City Terrace Drive features a “smart crosswalk”--the first in an unincorporated area of the county. Officials hope to replicate it elsewhere.

Smart crosswalks warn motorists of pedestrians in the intersection with quick laser-like flashes of light coming from the pavement and metal signs.

Officials are working on plans to install the next one in an unincorporated part of the county on Foothill Boulevard in La Crescenta.

The smart crosswalk at City Terrace Drive and Hicks Avenue is just one component of the project meant to address long-held complaints about pedestrian safety in that area.
