From Times Wire Reports

Cal State Sonoma is abandoning its mascot of 40 years, the Cossack, and will become the Seawolves when classes begin in August.

University President Ruben Arminana chose the new mascot after receiving proposals from a campuswide committee formed by student government.

Most predicted the reaction to the change would be mixed. Those opposing the original name linked it to barbarism and anti-Semitism. Fans of the old name said the school was dumping four decades of athletic history in the name of political correctness.
