N.J. Man Detained in Dispute Over Toys

From Times Wire Reports

Chinese factory workers are preventing a New Jersey man from leaving their town until he pays for toys they say they made for him.

The State Department said it has contacted Chinese authorities about the situation of Henry Zhu, a permanent U.S. resident. But the U.S. is not guaranteed access to Zhu because he is a Chinese citizen.

The Washington Post last week identified Zhu as a resident of Edison, N.J., and said he had been held for three weeks in a hotel in Sheyang, 200 miles northwest of Shanghai. Workers told the Post they want $55,000 for stuffed animals they made for Zhu’s import firm.
