Bibby Grows Angry Over Grievance

USC Coach Henry Bibby has yet to hear from the Pacific 10 Conference on his grievance of last week, when two Trojans were hit in the head by seemingly the same errant elbow late in their victory at Washington.

Bibby is upset with the non-response.

“I’m sure if it was a bigger-name coach, then something would have been done right away, but I haven’t heard one thing back,” he said Wednesday.

“And I’m disappointed in the league that they haven’t called us back or [Pac-10 coordinator of men’s basketball officiating] Lou Campanelli to review the film. That should have been done immediately.”

Campanelli could not be reached for comment, but Pac-10 spokesman Dave Hirsch said the league had asked USC for a tape of the alleged incident and had not received it yet.

After the tape arrives, Hirsch said, Campanelli and Commissioner Tom Hansen will view it.

On Dec. 27, Washington freshman forward Jeffrey Day was fighting his way through a double pick when his elbow allegedly connected with USC freshman guard Errick Craven’s right eye and the top of sophomore forward Jerry Dupree’s head.

Gregg Guenther Jr., a reserve tight end on the USC football team, has joined the basketball team

Guenther, a 6-foot-8, 250-pounder, averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds at Woodland Hills Taft High as a senior in 1999-2000 and was recruited to play basketball by Pepperdine and San Diego.

“He’s a physical presence that we don’t have,” Bibby said of Guenther.

“He brings a football-toughness that we don’t have. He brings us a lot of energy. Where he fits in, I don’t know yet. He’s way behind in the things we’re doing.... It’s just a matter of how quickly he picks things up.”

Senior point guard Brandon Granville has sat out the last two days of practice because of a sore left foot. USC plays Washington State at the Forum on Friday night.

“Hopefully Brandon’s going to be ready,” Bibby said. “But if not, then we go with [junior Robert Hutchinson] and we go with [freshman] Derrick Craven [Errick’s twin brother].”
