Ring Around the Dollar

I enjoyed the story about that new opera, Richard Wagner’s “Ring” cycle (“A Pause in the ‘Ring’ Cycle,” by Jan Breslauer, Dec. 30).

With so much space devoted to specially effected artists at Industrial Light & Magic, I expect a computer graphic imagery blockbuster capitalizing on the success of “The Lord of the Rings” and giving new meaning to the term “playing at selected theaters” since unnamed co-producers plan to build a $400-million joint to show it in their city. Some $60 million in production costs seems tame, and should provide lots of cute little mythical characters, much like Bilbo, Frodo, Pippin and Arwen together with a warm fuzzy story line guaranteed to give a chuckle to kids of all ages. Definitely PG-13.

Nothing in the article mentioned who would write the music. I envision something dramatic yet tender, portentous yet fulfilling. Maybe each character could have its own theme music. Hello, John Williams! And who is this Richard Wagner anyway? Did he write the opera or something? What has he done lately?
