U.S.: Pursue Real Peace, Not Just Self-Interest

Share

Re “Islamic World’s Hatred Dwarfs Its Admiration for America,” Jan. 6: Washington must do two things to defuse Muslim distrust and hatred: First, gain United Nations and world support for pressure on Israel to solve its problems, short of enslaving the entire Palestinian population. The settler communities must be turned over to the Palestinians and resettled with the Palestinian refugees. The U.S. and U.N. should provide for resettlement of the displaced Israelis in their proper place--Israel.

A Palestine state must be established that would include all prewar territory. Jerusalem must be a protectorate of the U.N. It’s assumed that Yasser Arafat was given 90% of his demands at Camp David and turned down the offer. The excluded 10% happened to include the only two really important issues.

Second, fulfill our obligation to bring a Marshall Plan to Afghanistan. We have a golden opportunity here to convince the Muslim world that we do indeed have a genuine interest in world peace, as opposed to mere self-interest.
