Project GRAD Gets Federal Funds Doubled
Federal funding for a program that works to increase the number of college-bound students has doubled to $18 million, it was announced Tuesday at the Project GRAD National Conference.
Included in the education bill recently signed by President Bush, Project GRAD (Graduation Really Achieves Dreams) USA will use the additional $9 million to expand programs and launch new ones.
The program aims to prepare children as young as preschool-age for college by improving reading and math skills, teaching children to be responsible and involving parents. Currently, 100,000 children in seven states are involved, including more than 20,000 Los Angeles Unified School District students in the northeast San Fernando Valley. Locally, the program began 2 1/2 years ago.
