Lane Trails Mikels in Raising Funds for Supervisor’s Race

Ventura County supervisor candidate John Lane received a $10,000 contribution from a union representing sheriff’s deputies, records show.

The labor group was Lane’s only monetary donor during the three-week period ended Jan. 19. House Graphics in Costa Mesa gave Lane campaign signs worth $1,896.

Lane, a Moorpark fraud investigator, is attempting to unseat 4th District Supervisor Judy Mikels in the March 5 primary. He is backed mostly by law enforcement unions.

The Ventura County Deputy Sheriffs’ Assn. has contributed a total of $15,000, about a third of Lane’s $47,000 campaign chest. Mikels, seeking a third term in the Simi Valley-based district, has raised slightly more than $75,000.

In the race to replace retiring county Clerk-Recorder Richard Dean, educator Yvonne Bodle raised $12,000 for the period, $11,000 of that in a loan to herself. Assistant Clerk-Recorder Phil J. Schmit reported $1,406 in contributions, $537 in a loan to himself. Jackie Rodgers, former county GOP chairwoman, reported $504 in contributions.

Assistant Treasurer-Tax Collector Larry Matheney raised $10,900 in his quest to replace the retiring Treasurer-Tax Collector Harold S. Pittman. Matheney’s total contributions are $61,000. His opponent, former Thousand Oaks City Councilman Mike Markey, reported a $1,600 loan to himself.
