Legal Firearms Don’t Contribute to Crime

Re “Drawing a Bead on Gun Sales,” Jan. 14:

How can we make Irvine a safer place to live? It’s already a nuclear-free zone. What now? How about a scheme in which responsible citizens cannot obtain guns for self-defense?

Contrary to assertions by the so-called anti-violence groups, the availability of legal firearms has nothing to do with the incidence of violent crime. If the City Council wants to reduce gun violence, it should look to disarm criminals.

And what about the 2nd Amendment? Here’s another thing those anti-violence analysts ignore: All of the evidence indicates that the 2nd Amendment, like other parts of the Bill of Rights, applies to and protects individual Americans.
