A Big Omission on Hawaii’s Big Island

In Susan Spano’s article on Hawaii hotel discounts, “Hawaii on Sale” (Jan. 13), she reports that after searching Web sites, consulting travel agents and going to the Kona Coast, she found discounts not as plentiful as she had expected.

My question: What Web sites did she look at? The Mauna Lani Resort has significant discounts posted on its Web site (www .maunalani.com). Why did she not check this resort? It is a sister resort to the Orchid. (They are on the same grounds and have a common entrance.) Mauna Lani has a promotion that offers an ocean-view room (including daily breakfast for two) for $295.

The article by Susan Spano did not surprise me. I believe the powers that be will wait until the entire state of Hawaii is in bankruptcy or, worse yet, falls to revolution.

With tourism being a major source of revenue, I can’t believe that hotels would not collaborate and create incentives not only to bring Japanese visitors back but also to appeal to the enormous Southern California market.

Many Las Vegas, Arizona and even California resorts have rolled back rates to combat the recession and stimulate travel after the tragic events last year. I don’t understand why Hawaii does not.
