From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Train service resumed Sunday morning after Amtrak officials determined that a wooden railroad trestle damaged by a fire Saturday remained structurally sound.

Only the surface of the trestle was burned, and the rail and the pile holding the bridge were in good condition, spokeswoman Liz O’Donoghue said. She said damaged railroad ties will be repaired or replaced in the next few weeks.

The blaze started as a grass fire near Interstate 5, then spread to the trestle, said Daniel Calderon, dispatch supervisor for the city Fire Department.
