American Council on Science and Health

acsh.org

Background: The council is an independent, nonprofit consumer education group that focuses on food, nutrition and environmental issues, drawing on the knowledge of about 350 doctors, researchers and policy experts. The Web site functions as a magazine of articles and essays on popular topics.

What Works: The site is skeptical on almost any topic, whether it’s hysteria over the threat of a “dirty” nuclear device or worries that fried food is causing cancer. By simply exposing the lack of evidence behind many health claims--that we need to drink eight glasses of water a day, for instance, or that drinking green tea prevents cancer--the site provides a soothing antidote to the endless miracle cures and health fears being shopped in ads and news stories each day. The information here comes mostly in small bites, though, in news releases, short essays and commentary from the council’s president. For more depth, you’ll have to pay for pamphlets and other publications.
