Two men pleaded not guilty to murder charges alleging they killed a 10-year-old girl with a shotgun blast aimed at members of a rival gang playing basketball in a Boston park.

The death of Trina Persad, who was shot Saturday, is the 26th murder in the city this year.

Marquis Nelson, 23, and Joseph Cousin, 17, were ordered held without bail after their arraignment.

Prosecutors say Nelson was driving when Cousin fired a shotgun at members of a rival gang in the park. Trina was hit in the head by 25 pellets and died Monday after life support was removed.

Police Commissioner Paul Evans said police were investigating whether more people were involved.

Nelson’s attorney, George Murphy, said his client denied being in the car. “He said, ‘I have an extensive record. They’re going to blame this on me,’ ” Murphy said.

Both men have handgun convictions, Assistant Dist. Atty. Josh Wall said.
