From Times Wire Reports

Mexico’s former ruling party appeared headed for a comeback in elections in the Pacific coast state of Nayarit, dealing a blow to President Vicente Fox’s party.

The Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, was ahead in votes tallied from Sunday’s election for the mayoralty of the state capital, Tepic, according to partial vote counts. The PRI also led in 13 other cities. Fox’s National Action Party, or PAN, led in just four.

With about 62% of the votes counted, the PRI also appeared likely to win a majority in the state assembly. The PAN, in a coalition with other parties, had won Tepic, a majority in the assembly and the governorship in 1999 elections.
