Spam Scam

Share

In “You’ve Got Spam” (Commentary, July 8), on proposed solutions to the problem of unsolicited e-mail, Sonia Arrison asks: “Is [making e-mail senders pay] a feasible system?” She then says: “Microsoft’s engineers thought so.” Why, of course they would.

Once they have “spammers” paying for the unsolicited e-mail they send, it would just be a matter of time before Microsoft and the Internet service providers use the same “feasible system” to find a way to make all of us pay for all e-mail. The only thing shocking about this shortsighted solution is how someone who could propose it has managed to become the director of a technology institute.
