From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A real estate executive pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges that he killed his wife, the daughter of late state Sen. Paul Carpenter.

Bruce Koklich, 43, of Lakewood was arrested Jan. 31 outside his Long Beach office in the death of Jana Carpenter-Koklich, 41, whose body has never been found.

The woman, presumed dead by authorities after traces of her blood were found in her Lakewood home and in her abandoned sport utility vehicle, was reported missing by her husband in August.

Koklich is free on a $1-million bond he posted in February.

He is due back in a Norwalk courthouse on Aug. 15 for a pretrial hearing.

The trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 5.
