Ivan Moffat, 84; Oscar Nominee for Screen Adaptation of ‘Giant’

Ivan Moffat, 84, who shared an Academy Award nomination for the screen adaptation of Edna Ferber’s epic novel “Giant,” died of a stroke July 4 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Among Moffat’s screenwriting credits are “Black Sunday,” “The Wayward Bus,” “Tender Is the Night,” “Boy on a Dolphin,” “They Came to Cordura,” and “Bhowani Junction.”

Moffat shared his Oscar nomination for “Giant,” the 1956 drama directed by George Stevens, with Fred Guiol. Moffat also served as associate producer on Stevens’ classic films “Shane” and “A Place in the Sun.”

The Cuban-born Moffat, who studied at the London College of Economics, served in the Army during World War II and was part of Stevens’ documentary film unit that covered the Allies in Europe.
