FCC Urges Quicker Digital TV Timetable

Share

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell singled out the consumer electronics industry for failing to endorse a voluntary timetable he set in April to help speed the transition to digital television.

Powell’s plan would require television manufacturers to install over-the-air digital tuners in 50% of TV sets that are 36 inches or larger by January 2004 and in all TV sets by 2006.

Jeff Joseph, a spokesman for the Consumer Electronics Assn., defended the industry’s efforts and said manufacturers would respond soon to Powell’s plan but would offer an alternative timetable.
