Wetlands Activists Sue Over Plan for Freeway
Two environmental groups have sued Caltrans over its plan to extend the Marina Freeway near the Ballona Wetlands.
The project, including new on-ramps and off-ramps and a bridge over Culver Boulevard, would pave over about two acres of wetlands, according to the lawsuit.
The $12-million project is intended to ease traffic congestion expected from the Playa Vista development near Marina del Rey.
“It is against the law to pave over our remaining wetlands for expanded roads that encourage more development,” said Rex Frankel, president of Ballona Ecosystem Education Project.
