$200-Million Cleanup of Old Army Camp Planned
The Army Corps of Engineers said it plans to spend $200 million over the next 20 years to clean up about 2,000 acres of an old Army camp that has been turned over to private use 45 miles northeast of here.
The agency anticipates it will take decades to clean up the former Camp Beale, where soldiers trained during and after World War II. The camp once had bombing, rifle, mortar, demolition and machine gun ranges.
Nationwide, there are 2,743 such sites that require cleanup, officials said. More than 400 sites are in California, which has more than twice as many as any other state.
