Social Workers’ Survey Finds Rise in Homeless
The homeless population in Monterey County has increased about 45% during the last three years, according to a survey compiled by social workers.
Representatives from a coalition of organizations that provide services to the homeless identified 2,681 homeless people during a two-day count in February. The report states that nearly one-third of the homeless people were families, but most were single men.
Children who left foster care because they were too old to be adopted were found among the homeless, the report states.
Better transitional housing is needed for those children, said Maria Giuriato of the county’s Community Action Agency.
The high cost of living and lack of affordable housing are the primary reasons for the growing number of homeless, officials said.
