Expanded Smoking Ban in Parks OKd
The Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to expand a ban on smoking in city parks.
Broadening a state law that prohibits smoking near children’s play areas and sandboxes, the city ordinance would ban smoking within 25 feet of playgrounds, bleachers, backstops, sports fields, ball diamonds and courts used for basketball, handball, tennis and paddle tennis. It also outlaws smoking in picnic areas where permits are required.
If Mayor James K. Hahn approves the smoking ban, it would become law 30 days after his signature.
