A jury awarded $5 million in damages to Novartis after concluding that rival Abbott Laboratories infringed one of its patents for a drug used by organ-transplant patients. The jurors reached their verdict after finding that Abbott copied Novartis’ 1999 patent for the cyclosporine compound. The drug, sold by Novartis as Neoral, and by Abbott as Gengraf, protects against tissue rejection in heart, kidney and liver transplant patients.
