British Soldiers Get Much-Needed Diversion

Share

About 200 British marines in Bagram crammed into a dining tent to take a break from the war and watch England’s opening World Cup match against Sweden.

One showed up in British-flag boxer shorts with a “45-Commando” tattoo on his shoulder. Another wore a fright wig in his country’s colors as the troops filled seats and tables in front of a wide-screen satellite TV for the match against Sweden.

“I’m not even a big footballer, I’m more of a rugby man,” said Marine Guy Connor, 25, coming off his morning watch. “But this is a good diversion. We’ve been looking forward to the match for days.”
