Consider the Alternative

On behalf of film technicians everywhere, let me apologize to Jim Bosche and to the many other Los Angeles residents who get routinely disturbed by our work (Letters, May 26).

When working, we try to keep in mind that wherever we film, we will undoubtedly disturb (and often upset) residents who live near our sets. We try to keep that to a minimum, but it happens. That’s not our goal, it’s just a byproduct of making movies and television shows.

I am forever amazed, however, that residents of L.A. routinely complain about film production. Would Bosche rather the lights in his window were shining in a Vancouver window instead?

Please try to learn to live with the occasional intrusion and be glad that we have the business in our town. For our part, we’ll try to keep the noise down.

For about the past 100 years, Jim Bosche’s neighborhood, the executive producer’s and every other neighborhood in L.A. have been our movie back lot. No one is exempt. If you move to Akron, Ohio, you can’t complain about the smell of burning rubber. You live in L.A., the movie-television-commercial-making capital of the world. That’s what we do here, and it smells like jobs and money for thousands and thousands of industry people. We film here. Love it or leave it!

Yes, we need to show consideration to residents, but similarly, these residents need to show consideration to the film industry (and its revenue), which is being pushed out of L.A. by greed and bureaucracy, lured by lower costs in Canada and other continents. I regret that Bosch didn’t receive notification. Apparently, notification was posted in his lobby, with copies left with the doorman for distribution. I am told the neighborhood association was informed and compensated. The solution is not to ban filming or demand money, but to work with the Entertainment Industry Development Corp. (L.A.’s permitting entity) to keep filming in L.A.
