Roman Catholics Are Not Being Stereotyped

Share

Re “Church Not Solely to Blame in Scandal,” Commentary, May 12:

I have neither heard nor read anywhere that the Roman Catholic priests, bishops and cardinals are the only ones to blame in this tragedy. As you point out, parents have a responsibility to be vigilant with regard to their children. But I find it repugnant that a “rush to stereotype Catholics” is offered as an explanation for attacks on the Roman Catholic Church.

Any large organization draws additional scrutiny. Furthermore, believers united under the mantle of moral leadership demand that the very notion that church leaders might be preying upon their most vulnerable members should be swiftly and openly investigated.

The decisions to simply counsel and relocate priests was no more a solution than rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

Perhaps the author also believes that we should spread the blame to the children?
