Xtra Heat Has Enough

Xtra Heat added another stakes victory to her resume with a victory by a neck over 5-1 shot Gold Mover in the $150,000 Vagrancy Handicap on Sunday at Belmont Park.

Purchased for $5,000 more than two years ago, the 4-year-old daughter of Dixieland Heat earned her 21st win in her 27th start and pushed her earnings to $1,923,305.

Trained by John Salzman, who also owns the filly with Kenneth Taylor and Harry Deitchman, Xtra Heat completed the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16 2/5. The 3-5 favorite was ridden by Harry Vega and carried topweight of 127 pounds. It was her fourth win in six races at Belmont.

Zip First, who paid $7.80 to win, took the $564,108 Ruidoso Futurity at Ruidoso Downs. A 2-year-old Texas-bred gelding, Zip First edged Fast First Call and Southern Cartel to win for the fifth time in six starts. The winner completed the 350 yards in the Grade I in 17.56 seconds.

Santa Anita Handicap winner Milwaukee Brew is expected to race in the $500,000 Californian on Saturday at Hollywood Park. It would be his first start since that Santa Anita win more than three months ago.

Ragin T Rex, who broke her maiden against $32,000 claimers on Jan. 9, scored a 17-1 surprise in her turf debut in the $77,250 Manhattan Beach Stakes at Hollywood Park. Owned by Thomas and Thomas Racing and trained by Warren Stute, Ragin T Rex held off Carinae to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:02 4/5 for the 5 1/2 furlongs on turf. Ridden by Matt Garcia, the 3-year-old Cat’s Career filly took her third consecutive win.
