Wine of the Week

Swanson Vineyards has a 14-year track record for serious, beautifully made reds. Its Sangiovese gets a lot of attention, but its 1999 Merlot is no slouch. Ripe for drinking now, it’s actually a deft blend of Merlot with touches of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. The initial impression is luscious cherries and plums laced with a bright, entrancing acidity. Tannins are round and soft, and the finish is sweet as summer. You can’t stop drinking it.

About $25. Available at most fine wine shops and retailers. If you can’t find it, call the winery at (707) 967-3500.
