Rescue Mission Planned for Ship Trapped in Ice
A South African research ship will sail to the Antarctic today in a hazardous attempt to rescue 107 scientists and crew aboard a German ship trapped in ice, spokesmen for the mission said.
Col. Piet Paxton said the oceanographic research vessel Agulhas would leave Cape Town for the journey of about 2,580 miles to the ice holding the Liberian- registered Magdalena Oldendorff.
The Agulhas crew plans to meet an Argentine naval icebreaker near the German ship and will try to pluck most passengers to safety with two Oryx military helicopters.
