Re “A Call for Segregating Truck Traffic,” June 6: So Congress considers building a separate roadway system for (really big) big rigs to haul freight. Great idea. It’s wonderful to have some fresh thinking on transportation.
Let’s optimize this proposed system. First, to move the freight quickly, give these truck roads the right of way. That is, all other traffic stops to allow the freight to go unimpeded. Second, to conserve energy, use steel wheels on steel roads. That way, the truck road system also emits as little diesel exhaust as possible. Third, let’s optimize the dispatching of the freight, so that all loads going to the same location go together. Finally, let’s give this new system a catchy name. How does “railroad” sound?
