West Bank Fence Is Not Enough

Share

Israel is finally recognizing that it is impossible for it to negotiate with the Palestinian Authority (“Israel Gives In to Fence,” June 17). But building fences is not enough. It’s time for Israel to dismantle its settlements and give up the West Bank and Gaza Strip, but not to the Palestinians. Instead, give the West Bank back to Jordan and Gaza back to Egypt, which kept the Palestinians without statehood for the 19 years before Israel’s occupation.

Surely Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s wall is a symbolic gesture, because even a fool knows that terrorists can silently swoop down in the dark of a moonless night and carry out their devilish deeds. The silver lining is that maybe Israeli commandos might preempt the killers by doing the same.

There is already a Palestinian state in the Middle East called Jordan. Why should the Israelis have to give back even one inch of the territory that they got not by attacking another nation but in defending themselves? As far as Jerusalem is concerned, the Muslims have no credible claim to the city.
