Anewly renovated 29-unit apartment complex for formerly homeless residents with mental disabilities opened its doors June 13 in the Central City West area of downtown Los Angeles, just west of the 110 Freeway.

The complex, located close to bus lines and local health services, was built by A Community of Friends, a nonprofit affordable-housing development company.

Each studio unit features a private kitchen and bathroom.

In addition to providing permanent housing, the Maryland Apartments complex offers residents outdoor and indoor recreational space, a training and computer room, a community patio and garden area, a case management office and on-site support services to facilitate independent living skills.

The housing development was funded in part by a loan from City of Industry Funds, which is administered by the County of Los Angeles Community Development Commission.

Additional funding for the $3-million complex came from a Bank of America loan, the Federal Home Loan Bank and the Enterprise Social Investment Corp.*
