Government Says Nation Is on Brink of Civil War

Officials in Kyrgyzstan said the Central Asian nation was on the verge of civil war, and they accused the small but increasingly bold opposition of trying to overthrow the country’s leadership.

Thousands of opposition supporters have been rallying in the rebellious south for 10 days, calling on President Askar A. Akayev to resign in the worst political crisis since independence in 1991.

“We are on the verge of clashes among our fellow citizens,” Prime Minister Nikolai Tanayev said.
