Bill Would Extend Time to File Abuse Claims
The state Assembly on Monday unanimously passed a bill giving victims of child abuse more time to claim damages and sue a third party.
The measure, approved on a 73-0 vote, had previously passed the Senate.
It was written in response to recent allegations of abuse by priests, said the author, Sen. John Burton (D-San Francisco).
Current law requires that a victim claim damages or file a lawsuit by age 26.
Burton’s bill would extend that by granting the victim a three-year window from discovering the abuse to bring an action against a third party.
