From Times Wire Reports

The Military Collegium of the Supreme Court upheld a treason verdict against a military journalist in a case that has raised questions about Russia’s commitment to freedom of the press.

Grigory Pasko had been sentenced to four years in prison by a military court for attending a meeting of Russian naval commanders and taking notes while there. The court said he intended to pass the notes to Japanese reporters with whom he had worked.

Pasko’s lawyer said he would appeal to higher authorities at the court, but both Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International said Pasko’s next stop would have to be the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France.
