From Times Staff Reports

A Pacoima elementary school principal who angered Latino parents by requesting that only English be spoken on campus has requested a transfer, school district officials said.

Stannis Steinbeck will serve her last day as principal of Telfair Elementary School on July 5, when the academic year ends, and then will be reassigned, possibly as a principal, said Judy Burton, the Los Angeles Unified School District’s superintendent for the northeast San Fernando Valley.

Telfair, one of the district’s lowest performing schools, has had three principals in the last four years. Steinbeck got into a spat with parents last month after she asked some Spanish-speaking parents to use only English.

Parents accused Steinbeck of being insensitive, but Burton said the district had no intention of moving the principal had she not requested the transfer. Burton said Telfair has been plagued by inconsistent leadership and infighting among faculty.
