200 March in Nation’s First Gay Parade
About 200 people marched through the Croatian capital, Zagreb, under heavy security in the country’s first gay pride parade to fight for social and legal rights.
Some passersby applauded and cheered, while others booed and shouted abuse at the marchers, who carried signs with slogans such as “Silence Is Humiliation.”
Interior Minister Sime Lucin, several parliament members and human rights officials joined the parade that lasted two hours.
Homosexuals can serve in the Croatian army but are not allowed to marry or adopt children. No prominent figure in the predominately Roman Catholic country has ever admitted to being gay.
