The drama surrounding Arkansas basketball Coach Nolan Richardson deepened Thursday when he had a 90-minute meeting with Chancellor John White and Athletic Director Frank Broyles, canceled a news conference and skipped practice.

The meeting with White and Broyles ended without a resolution of Richardson’s status, but Little Rock station KATV reported that Richardson rejected an offer to buy out the remaining six years of his $1.03 million-a-year contract. The university declined to say if an offer was made.

White’s office released a statement saying: “The discussions from this morning are continuing. The university expects to resolve the situation soon and we’ll have no further statements until that time.”

On Monday, Richardson, an African American, criticized reporters and fans, closed practices and questioned why only white reporters were assigned to cover the team. He has been under fire since making the remarks.
