City Council Pushing for Living-Wage Ordinance
City Council members moved a step closer this week to adopting a so-called living-wage ordinance.
A majority of the council directed city staff at a meeting to draw up a proposal guaranteeing $9 per hour plus health benefits, or $11.25 per hour without the benefits, to city employees and employees of city contractors.
No deadline has been set to vote on such a plan, but at least two council members would like to vote before July, when the new budget year begins, said Das Williams, spokesman for the Ventura County Living Wage Coalition.
The plan could cost taxpayers about $1 million a year, Williams said.
