San Jose’s bid for history came up short.

Pavel Kubina scored twice during a three-goal second period as the Tampa Bay Lightning beat San Jose, 4-2, Friday night at Tampa, Fla., denying the Sharks a franchise-record eight-game winning streak.

Brad Richards had two goals and an assist for Tampa Bay, which ended a four-game losing streak. His second goal was an empty-netter with 27 seconds left.

Buffalo 4, Boston 3--Rhett Warrener scored with 3:36 remaining, his shot deflecting in off an opponent’s stick, as the Sabres won at Buffalo, N.Y.

New Jersey 4, Toronto 2--Scott Gomez and Petr Sykora scored on their first two shots as the Devils won at East Rutherford, N.J.

Atlanta 4, New York Islanders 3--Yannick Tremblay scored two goals, including the winner with 3:03 remaining for the first multi-goal game of his career, as the Thrashers won at Atlanta.

Joe Thornton of the Boston Bruins was suspended for three games without pay for a cross-check against Rod Brind’Amour of the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night.... Center Doug Weight of the St. Louis Blues will be out indefinitely with a ligament sprain in his right knee and a sprained pelvis, suffered Thursday against Calgary.
