School Vandalism

Share

There is a quick and effective solution to damage done to schools at night and over weekends (“City Posts Reward in Vandalism of Valley School,” Feb. 27). Provide an apartment or other quarters to a head custodian who would live on the school grounds rent-free. The very presence of a live person and possibly a dog on campus would discourage vandals. This practice works very well in some schools I observed in France.

The reported cost of school vandalism being millions of dollars, shouldn’t it be obvious to the “brains” in charge to install electronic surveillance and alarms rather than relying solely on outnumbered manpower? Motion detectors certainly should be cost-effective.
