Study Sees Risk for Kids in Extended Cab Pickups

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Children riding in the rear seat of compact extended cab pickups are almost five times as likely to be injured in a crash as children riding in the back seats of other vehicles, a study said.

The disparity is because of the lack of legroom and shoulder belts in backseats, according to a study by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia that appears in the Journal of the American Medical Assn.

“This is not the optimal vehicle for transporting children,” said Dr. Flaura Winston, lead author of the report. “There is not much room for the child to move in . . . a crash.”
